Title: Dear Stephen Dear Stephen,
Author: lotrfreak21
Pairing [Jon/Stephen]
Rating [PG-13 for swearing, I blame it on The Catcher in the Rye]
--Summary: Stephen receives a letter from Jon stating that he cannot go on anymore. [This fic was inspired by Johnny Cash's song I'm Gonna Write You a Tear Strained Letter. You can find the lyrics somewhere, I'm too lazy. And suicide is BAD! If you even have slight remote thoughts about suicide, talk to someone! ] Several references to The Fellowship of the Ring are made. Can you spot them before Jon and Stephen do?
--Note: Most of the situations Jon describes in the letter are completely fictional, except for the bit about the administration. I have no idea of the layout of
--Also, I'm thinking of writing a sequel to this…

I can’t go on anymore, it's just too much. My religion has failed me, my wife has failed me, and this goddamned administration has failed everyone. I don't know what I have to live for anymore. The only thing that was ever keeping me going was you, dearest Stephen.
But that will never be possible. You have a wife, children, and a bright future. All I had lived for before was to see your smiling face each day and to hope that maybe someday; somehow, we could be together. But you are happy with your family, and I want your happiness, even if it does not mean mine.
I wanted to tell you how much you've meant to me all these long years we've been friends.
We will never be together Stephen, no matter how much I could hope or wish we could.
I'm leaving this world. Think of me occasionally, I will be watching over you somewhere nearby, always looking out for you. Maybe even from heaven, if there is such a place.
Goodbye Stephen.
I love you.

-P.S. I will not say, do not weep, for not all tears are in evil.
The letter was strained with tears.
Stephen's mouth was hanging open.
How long ago did Jon leave? God dammit!
"Hey, you there!" he yelled to a startled intern, "When did Jon leave?"
"Uhh…you mean Mr. Stewart?"
Stephen rolled his eyes and nearly screamed in hysterics, "Yes Mr. Stewart you asshole! WHEN DID HE LEAVE?" he was shaking the poor boy.
"Aah! About five minutes ago sir! He said he was going to the park!"
Stephen stopped shaking him, "
"Yessir!"
-----------------
"Hey! You forgot to pay me bucko!"
Stephen was already sprinting out of the taxicab into the cold January air. "Send a bill to The Colbert Report!" he screamed over his shoulder. He could honestly car less if the stupid goddamned taxi driver would call a cop on him. The idiot had taken 15 minutes to get here; Jon could be dead by now!
No, no! Musn't think that no, musn't think that. Jon…gotta get to Jon!
"Run faster you pieces of shit!" he yelled to his legs. A few people were looking at him strangely; some had even recognized him and were pointing at him. But Stephen didn't care.
He didn't care. He ran
-----------------
The path turned a corner which led to the lake.
He stopped dead, breathing like a race horse.
There was Jon, waist deep in the goddamn water, staring at the moon.
"Jon!" he screamed. Jon turned, and looked at Stephen, a sad smile on his face. Silent tears were rolling down his cheeks.
"I'm going Stephen! You can't stop me."
"Jooonnnn!" Stephen wailed as Jon walked forward, deeper into the water. "Jon! No!" he ran into the lake and barely felt the freezing water touch his legs. Jon was now shoulder length in water.
"Go back Stephen!" Jon continued to go forward in the water. "You can't follow me where I'm going."
"I ain't letting you go Jon!" With a sudden twinge of realization, Stephen noticed a few distinct similarities between this and the end of The Fellowship of the Ring.
I've got to pretend to drown, then he'll save me, and I'll tell him how I really feel.
Stephen flailed around in the water, "Gack! Jon, help! I'm drowning! Jooo-" his scream was lost in a gurgle as he forced himself into the water.
Jon was neck deep in water when he heard Stephen's cry for help. This is like the end of The Fellowship of the Ring. But what if Stephen really is drowning?
"Dammit Stephen! I'm coming!" he turned and swam to where Stephen had gone under. He saw Stephen's hand suddenly appear near the top of the water and he grabbed it and hauled Stephen up and scooped him up into his arms. Stephen sputtered and coughed and Jon hugged him, sobbing.
"You god damned bastard!" he cried.
"Did you think I was just going to let you die Jon?"
Jon didn't answer; he merely hugged Stephen closer and sobbed harder.
"I couldn't let you go on to Mordor alone, Mr. Frodo." Stephen whispered into Jon's chest.
"Nerds…" muttered Jon.
"Can we get out of this lake now, Mr. Frodo?"
Jon smiled through his tears, "Certainly Samwise, you fool."
